Wireless Client Bridge

Has anyone tried the Repeater Bridge on the Netgear R8000?

The DD-WRT instructions for the R8000 explicitly indicate NOT to use Wireless Client Bridge. I assume this is because with newer routers with MIMO radios do not support Client Bridge and instead allow the configuration of Repeater Bridge mode (which creates a wifi bridge in the same subnet and allows both wifi *and* wired connections both sides of the bridge).

I am curious to know if anyone has successfully configured the R8000 in Repeater Bridge mode.

  1. I am seeking a solution to take the R8000 on the road with me to use in hotel rooms and connect it to their wifi as a Bridge, so I can then connect in my room to my router with multiple devices.
  2. I was hoping to isolate my router and enable DHCP for devices on my router's network to get an IP in their own segment. Is this possible? What mode should the router operate?
  3. Can my router use Private Internet Access VPN provider in the OpenVPN service while operating in a Repeater Bridge capacity?

Look forward to your insight.

DD-WRT WAN configuration when using OpenVPN

I cannot find conclusive evidence if it is possible (or lack thereof) to configure the WAN to the modem (in Bridge passthrough mode) when using OpenVPN.

Has anyone successfully configured WAN function when using OpenVPN on DD-WRT? How did you do it?

dd-wrt WAN DHCP and R8000 vs wndr4500

========Long post: Sorry but there is a lot of background. Below was posted in a DSLreports forum but the issue was originally posted here under the WNDR4500v1 forum when I was troubleshooting that device.========

I have had Charter cable since about 2008 and after a bad period between 2008-2009 is had been rock solid. Almost like a real utility, always on. Fast forward to 6 weeks ago and it has become nearly 100% unreliable. for the past 4-5 years I have been using a Motorola SB6120 modem and Netgear wnd4500v1 router running dd-wrt. This setup just worked, no issues at all. Out of no where started having problems. After extensive troubleshooting I began to notice consistent WAN DHCP issues. Where I used to get a dynamic IP assignment that would last for weeks I was now getting leases that were as short as 1 hour with nothing greater that 6 hours for weeks.

The problem initially started with incomplete DHCP where I would get WAN ip, subnet and gateway but no DNS. To counter I configured the router with a static openDNS DNS assignment. Eventually I stopped getting DHCP addresses at all from the modem almost as if the WAN port on the router had died. I found that if I cycled the WAN port from active to disabled back to active DHCP I would get a complete DHCP assignment but again with a short 1 hour lease. When the lease was up the connection would drop. No new lease. Sometimes the connection would be up for days without issue then bam, can't get an address.

Suspecting old gear was the problem I replaced the power brick on the router which tested good with no load. No impact on the problem. Checked the power brick on the modem and found it was providing 14.4vdc when it should have been 12vdc. Replaced. Charter tech stated signals from the Motorola modem improved with the new power brick but were still marginal. I suspected the 14.4vdc damaged the modem. Yesterday I replaced the Motorola modem AND the router. I had an old DOCSIS 3.0 Ubee modem from Charter that I never used since I had the Motorola. I also purchased and configured a new Netgear R8000 with the latest dd-wrt firmware.

This configuration it worse than the old setup. After a few hours the router just stops responding. At lest with the old wndr4500 the LAN side of the router would continue to work perfectly even when the WAN was down. I could dial into the 4500 to look at the WAN config and see it was not getting an assignment. With the R8000 LAN and WAN just stop responding. Charter support claims the modem looks good but can't explain the change in WAN DCHP assignments and why the modem will not acknowledge DHCP request. I have a serial connection configured on the wndr4500v1 and can watch the unanswered discovery request sent to the modem.

The only thing in common at this point is dd-wrt as the modems have been changed and routers swapped. I currently have the old 4500 router in place as it is more reliable than the new R8000 which freezes after a few hours. As a last test I will re-flash the old 4500 with the oldest dd-wrt I can find to see if something changed with the new builds but I can't do that with the R8000 as everything is new with that router. I still think Charter has changed something in their network config that is breaking dd-wrt routers. Connecting laptop directly to modem via a switch always works. I have not tried re-flashing the R8000 router back to Netgear firmware an may test that this weekend. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Question about Firmwares for R8000

I bought a R8000 last night and it seems like an amazing unit. I was looking at the factory firmware and there isn't an easy way to setup time scheduling for mac addresses. I have kids and like to prevent internet access based on the day of the week/time/device for kid of X age. I had an Asus RT-AC87U and it had this scheduling functionality but after trying to install DDWRT it never worked the same even though its listed as an open source router and now keeps crashing hence the replacement. Does DDWRT firmware allow for time scheduling based on mac address, not IP address for those smart kids out there? I was expecting to see a lot more activity in the forums with thoughts experiences with using DDWRT on this router. Which is the best one firmware version? I work from home so my router working the way I need it to is very important.

Help! How do I configure WAN with my static IP from ISP

$

Using a modem in Bridge Mode how do I configure the WAN to use my ISP supplied static IP?

Normally the modem would have the static IP entered in its configuration but to use with DD-WRT the modem needs to be in Bridge Mode and the DD-WRT WAN would be configured in PPPoE with the supplied ISP username and password.

Your ideas would be ideal!

Google Play not playing (communicating) with DD-WRT and OpenVPN

For the past 8 months I have been using Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN  installed on a Netgear R8000 router using DD-WRT OpenVPN and today when I tried to connect to Google Play with my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone to check and update the installed apps I was unable to make a connection.

I tested the wifi further by loading websites using Chrome and duckduckgo app, and music streaming from a radio station was also possible but Google Play would not connect.

I believe the problem is with PIA VPN when operating and connecting via the router because if I disable the VPN a connection is made. ALSO tested by turning OFF wifi and using cellular MobileData with PIA VPN turned ON and again a connection was possible.

Have you experienced this issue when using DD-WRT on the router and how did you resolve the odd situation?

Netgear R8000 Repeater Bridge and Client Bridge - not working

I have revived my router through a lot of processes.  Now my router is up to the latest firmware but every time I tried to use my router is a wireless repeater bridge or client bridge it is bricked.  I have to use nvram erase to get it back.  Also I have tried to use it as a regular router but it does not work.  The local connections and the pings are good but the internet does not work.  I have tried both static and dynamic ip WAN addresses but still not working.  Can someone offer me a real insight to this?  Thanks.

DD-WRT Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r29440M kongac (04/24/16)

Hi everyone,

Trying to set up a VAP and while I can see the SSID, I still can't connect to it.  Followed the instructions here http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1730493 and here  https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Guest_WiFi_%2B_abuse_control_for_b...

My settings are in the screenshots below.

Please disregard the DNS targets, I was just changing IPs around

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi All,

I just got my R8000 unit about 1 weeks. I just flashed to tomato.

I would need to have 2 vlan ID, 1 is for Internet VID 500 and IPTV VID 600. I managed to get the VID 500 work, but VID 600 failed.

How should I configure in Tomato?

Thanks

VNC Repeater HOWTO?

Hello,

I see the amazing develpopment here have added VNC Repeater service to ddwrt.

I cannot find a guide on how to configure. If someone could point me in teh right direction I am sure I can figure it out.

I would gladly write a HOWTO, once I have figured it out.

There is a HOWTO for OpenRouter, but not one specifically for DDWRT.

Thanks in advance.

R8000 in infinite loop, need help restoring

$

Hello,

I installed the latest version of dd-wrt on the netgear R8000. The install was a success. I reached the dd-wrt gui via https. Unfortunately, I changed my wifi settings on the R8000 to Client Bridge mode then saved and rebooted. After that the R8000 went into an infinite loops and keeps rebooting itself. The R8000 is plugged into my home router (fios) and was set as an AP by default. I did not want the AP setting and wanted the R8000 to stand as its own network, say 10.0.0.1 instead of 192.168.1.1 being that my fios router is 192.168.1.10.

Can someone give me some advice on how to get back into the dd-wrt gui? I was looking forward to setting it up as a VPN Router, using a paid vpn service. I tried holding in the reset button on the R8000 but that did not change anything and the R8000 continues to reboot itself.

Thanks in advance!

PS: I installed DD-WRT by Tathagata for NETGEAR R8000 Nighthawk (Rev 29627) 2016-06-04 14:16 from http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/dd-wrt-tathagata-netgear-r8000-nighthawk-rev-29627

R8000 - Can't get VAP WLAN1.1 added to bridge

I try to add my SSID "Guest_2.4" which is defined as VAP on WLAN1.1 to bridge1 which is my guest lan subnet (192.168.5.0/24 via VLAN 5). It works fine for SSID "Guest" which is VAP on WLAN2.1.

For unclear reasons, WLAN2.1 and VLAN5 are attached to bridge1, but WLAN1.1 isn't, altought it is in the "assign to bridge" list. See below for actual configuration.

Anybody an idea why WLAN1.1 is not added to bridge1?
