Questions Regarding Initial Upgrade of R8000 Router

Hi all,

I am a complete noob to DD-WRT and need some kind assistance in my persuit of open router freedom!

Unfortunately, the information available all over the internet really distorts the actual process required to upgrade any router to DD-WRT.  From videos, forums, written blogs, wiki guides, its really all over the place and well, rather confusing for a first timer hence my request.  I do not want to "brick" my router so I thought it would be best to ask for some help rather than making potentially flawed assumptions.

So I have a nighthawk r8000 which is currently running the lastest firmware and connected to a fibre optic broadband vendor with no username or password required for a connection.

In my research on this excellent site, I found and began following Subhra's guide http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/how-flash-dd-wrt-open-source-firmware-netgear-r8000-nighthawk-x6 but have become confused with some of the items in it.

Following the guide introduction (before the actual steps are covered), I access the Netgear support site and downloaded the initial firmware from : http://www.netgear.com/support/product/R8000#Firmware%20Version%201.0.0.46%20(Initial%20Release)

Question 1:  Can I not just reset my new router to it's factory settings instead of doing this?  What's the difference between each approach?

Following on to download the DD-WRT firmware (still in the guide introduction) from http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/list?cat=100 I arrive at a page with various downloads for different routers. Even after filtering by the R8000 model, I am still presented with various download choices.

Question 2:  Does one download the latest DD-WRT by Tathagata (Rev. 29627 as I write this message) or do I need something else?

Question 3:  How do I use Kong's package, do I install it over the top of DD-WRT or skip the above and go straight to installing Kongs package instead?

At this point, I am ready to go and have backed up my current configuration settings file, I just need to know which software to use and in what sequence.

Anyone having slow Wifi issues with Tomato on the R8000?

Hey Everyone,

I just installed Tomato on my R8000 and wired network speeds are great.  I have 300/30 and wired I'm getting ~200 download.  However, Wifi I have gone from ~150 down on DD-WRT to ~20 down with Tomato.  Anyone else running Tomato on the R8000?  Any Wifi speed issues?  If not, can you share your config for the various interfaces?

Unable to restore default firmware from tomato

Hi,

 

I am having a few drop out problems on tomato and would like to go back to the factory firmwear.

If I try and upgrade using the tomato web interface I get the following error and the router reboots back to tomato.

 

/tmp/flashhUZG4t: Bad trx header

 

I also tried to upload the default firmwear via tftp and it is unable to connect. 

I tried the latest firmwear and the oldest on both methods and neither worked.

 

Help!

Installation Issue

Hello,

I am wanting to upgrade my router to run Kong's firmware but I am confused with two of the steps involved.

The first is the factory restoration process.  Some suggest using the "Revert to factory default settings" option from within the router's web gui whereas others suggest downloading the initial firmware directly from the Netgear website and uploading that instead.  Which one is it?

The second issue I am having is determining if Kong's .chk file is the only file I need to upload to perform my upgrade?

This link (http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/quick-review-dd-wrt-kong-mod-firmwar...) suggests that the software flashing process is very simple, however I am holding my reservations because the instructions within this site (and others as well) are often very conflicting of each other.

Bricked my R8000 installing Tomato

After installing Tomato all i get is an amber power light. I tried to unbrick it but putty won't open the serial connection and I cant ping the router with a static IP set on my pc. any suggestions?

Bricked R8000

Hey All,

New hear hoping someone has the answer.

Flashed initial tomato to stock firmware on my netgear r8000.

Then upgraded to latest Arm-137 AIO . RIght after that stuck in boot loop.

Tried multiple resets does no luck.

Started continuous ping.. After 15seconds I get 4 pings from router and then nothing.

Hook up my usb-ttl. Can see boot sequence but cant break boot with Ctrl+C .

Tried many times and nothing. Tried with flow control on and off.

Do I have a new door stop?

Or does anyone know a way around this?

NAT Loopback not working

Hello,

I am using DD-WRT build 30020M from Kong on my R8000 and I'm very happy with it, but there's one issue: I can't get NAT loopback working. 

I unchecked "Filter WAN NAT redirection" under Security -> Firewall, but it still isn't working.

Is there any way to get this working?

Question about Firmwares for R8000

I bought a R8000 last night and it seems like an amazing unit. I was looking at the factory firmware and there isn't an easy way to setup time scheduling for mac addresses. I have kids and like to prevent internet access based on the day of the week/time/device for kid of X age. I had an Asus RT-AC87U and it had this scheduling functionality but after trying to install DDWRT it never worked the same even though its listed as an open source router and now keeps crashing hence the replacement. Does DDWRT firmware allow for time scheduling based on mac address, not IP address for those smart kids out there? I was expecting to see a lot more activity in the forums with thoughts experiences with using DDWRT on this router. Which is the best one firmware version? I work from home so my router working the way I need it to is very important.

I am new to DD-WRT and am trying to setup R8000.

I have downloaded and flashed latest kong build released on 4 April 2016 using following steps

restore factory setting ->flash with kong build ->reset using hardware reset button ->configure router

Set up three SSIDs , all are named differently 

2.4 band settings are as follows

Wireless Mode

Wireless Network Name (SSID)

Wireless SSID Broadcast

Please help with the settings of virtual interface for guest network.

Help! How do I configure WAN with my static IP from ISP

Using a modem in Bridge Mode how do I configure the WAN to use my ISP supplied static IP?

Normally the modem would have the static IP entered in its configuration but to use with DD-WRT the modem needs to be in Bridge Mode and the DD-WRT WAN would be configured in PPPoE with the supplied ISP username and password.

Your ideas would be ideal!

How could I load latest dd-wrt firmware?

I have used

USB-TTL cable

and I got into the screen it says busybox v1.7.2

I was able to use ls, vi, cd.....commands but when I tried to use tftp and it said that I have to use tftp in octet mode.  I happened because I tried to get back to Netgear firmware but it did not get me back to there.  Can you some one give me some commands for me to get upload the latest dd-wrt firmware or netgear firmware.  I have the firmware ready but I don't know how to open the connection to transfer the firmware back.  I will let you see the screen later, probably I would my phone to try.

Google Play not playing (communicating) with DD-WRT and OpenVPN

For the past 8 months I have been using Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN  installed on a Netgear R8000 router using DD-WRT OpenVPN and today when I tried to connect to Google Play with my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone to check and update the installed apps I was unable to make a connection.
 
I tested the wifi further by loading websites using Chrome and duckduckgo app, and music streaming from a radio station was also possible but Google Play would not connect.
 
I believe the problem is with PIA VPN when operating and connecting via the router because if I disable the VPN a connection is made. ALSO tested by turning OFF wifi and using cellular MobileData with PIA VPN turned ON and again a connection was possible.
 
Have you experienced this issue when using DD-WRT on the router and how did you resolve the odd situation?

Netgear R8000 Repeater Bridge and Client Bridge - not working

I have revived my router through a lot of processes.  Now my router is up to the latest firmware but every time I tried to use my router is a wireless repeater bridge or client bridge it is bricked.  I have to use nvram erase to get it back.  Also I have tried to use it as a regular router but it does not work.  The local connections and the pings are good but the internet does not work.  I have tried both static and dynamic ip WAN addresses but still not working.  Can someone offer me a real insight to this?  Thanks.

After installing the tomato firmware on my R8000 I was having lots of issues with wireless so I decided to go back to stock firmware. Well long story short for some reason now my R8000 is showing a R7000 firmare and I am not able to do anything about it. can anybody help?

Hi everyone,

Trying to set up a VAP and while I can see the SSID, I still can't connect to it.  Followed the instructions here http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1730493 and here  https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Guest_WiFi_%2B_abuse_control_for_b...

My settings are in the screenshots below.  

Please disregard the DNS targets, I was just changing IPs around

Vlan for IPTV and Internet

Hi All,

I just got my R8000 unit about 1 weeks. I just flashed to tomato.

I would need to have 2 vlan ID, 1 is for Internet VID 500 and IPTV VID 600. I managed to get the VID 500 work, but VID 600 failed.

How should I configure in Tomato?

Hello,

I see the amazing develpopment here have added VNC Repeater service to ddwrt.

I cannot find a guide on how to configure. If someone could point me in teh right direction I am sure I can figure it out.

I would gladly write a HOWTO, once I have figured it out.

There is a HOWTO for OpenRouter, but not one specifically for DDWRT.
