Hi!

Just got the X6 Nighthalk yesterday and am trying to set things up.  I noticed that even after i set a password for the settings panel (192.168.1.1) and then logout, going back to the home page doesnt require me to enter a login.

Is this normal? How do i make sure this settings panel is locked down better?  Thanks,

Stock Firmware for R8000 in .bin format

Can't get rid of dd-wrt network and only see two networks

Hi everyone

I've just upgraded to the latest Kong build (27775M) for my R8000 and for some reason I can't see all three networks.

I can a dd-wrt that can be altered or have a security key applied to it.

I can't see Wireless Physical Interface wl0  when I look at my wifi selector

The only wifi that behaves itself is wl1.

The biggest problem is the phantom dd-wrt which I cannot edit.

Any ideas?

Thanks

R8000 with ZTE 4G Dongle?

I'm new to open source firmware so hoping that someone with more know how them myself can help. I have a Netgear R8000 router, no ADSL is available where I live so my only internet is via 3G/4G internet. I have an unlocked Telstra branded ZTE MF 823 4G dongle, is it possible to run this directly from my R8000 router? If so how do I go about doing this? Thank you for any help.

R8000 DD-WRT Build 27775 & 27950 Virtual WLAN not working on 2.4 Ghz (WL1) interface.

The radio functionality is so much better in both 27775 and 27950M builds on Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6.

Unfortunately I do have an issue I would like to bring up.

I have reset to defaults using GUI and h/w button and set up manually in both builds. There is a problem getting the virtual WLAN interface to work on the 2.4Ghz Radio. I am not having this problem on the 5 GHZ radios. I can create a WLAN SSID on both physical interfaces in the GUI and then create virtual interfaces on both of them and bind them to different bridging interfaces. They work properly if they are on the same bridge interface as the physical or on a separate bridge interface with unique VLAN. It all works...

Unfortunately on the 2.4 Ghz Radio I can create the Virtual Interface in the GUI and configure it. But the virtual interface will not allow clients to connect. The SSID shows up and clients can see it but are unable to connect. Also when in the Networking GUI Tab the unique bridging assignment is created and it makes no difference which bridging interface it is assigned to. WL1.1 does not show up in the Current Bridging Table.

WL1.1 is available to assign and gets assigned but does not show up in table. WL0.1 and WL2.1 can be assigned and show up in the Current Table when assigned and work properly when bound to individual VLAN bridging interfaces.

(br0 = VLAN1 VLAN2 eth1 eth2 eth3) this is default without assignment.

(br3 = VLAN3 WL0.1 WL2.1) this is custom by assignments including WL1.1. but WL1.1 never shows up in Current Bridgin Table.

The point of this configuration is to create a VLAN for Guest Network. There is a separate Router/Firewall providing DHCP and NAT. It has the two VLAN interfaces and everything works on the 5ghz radios. The physical SSID binding gets DHCP from VLAN1 and the virtual SSID gets DHCP from VLAN3 on the 5Ghz interfaces. On the 2.4 Ghz interface the physical SSID works properly but the virtual SSID does not.  If I create a second virtual interface on 2.4Ghz (WL1.2) then it shows up in the current Bridging table properly as assigned but none of the WLAN's are able to authenticate clients and I cannot connect to any 2.4 Ghz SSID's (WL1, WL1.1, WL1.2)

I hope I have described the problem adequately. It seems that everything else works and the radios are much more stable and reliable. It is important to provide a guest network on 2.4 Ghz radio for backwards compatibility.

Hopefully someone else can test and verify this problem and it can be resolved.

hi,

i have just bought this R8000 and flashed it with the latest Kong build 27775m.

there are 3 configs for each of the wireless antennae.

i have named them 3 different names and can see all of them on the wifi list.

BUT, i can't log in to wl2.  when i try with my windows laptop, it asks me for a user name and password.  but i havent set any user name.

the wl0 has really weak signal, im not sure if this is the firmware or the hardware.

only wl1 the 2.4GHz channel is working normally.

can someone please help me or give me any suggestions on how to fix this? i am new to custom firmware for routers.

thank you

USB 3.0 port problem

I connected  WD MyBookDuo to the USB 3 port on my R8000 and all was well. I did some backups using Acronis True Image 2015, all well. But now with the WD MyBook Duo in the USB 3 port the ReadyShare utility says no USB connected and the USB led is off. The network map however does show the WD MyBookDuo, it is just not seeing it as a USB device when on USB 3 port. I can use other USB 3 devices on the USB 3 port OK.

The WD Mybook Duo connects Ok on the USB 2 port and also works OK on my PC USB 3 port. I have reinstalled the latest firmware manually, I have factory resei with no luck. Any thoughts ? Would DD-WRT help ?

Hello,

Have an issue not being able to forward a to my webserver.

My router (R8000) is connect to a VPN. have setup DDNS (no-ip) in the router and have configured to forward port 80 to my web server.

Found on youtube this to add to my firewall

insmod ipt_mark
insmod xt_mark
iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -i ! `get_wanface` -d `nvram get wan_ipaddr` -j MARK --set-mark 0xd001
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -m mark --mark 0xd001 -j MASQUERADE

it didnt work

Have tried having the router update no-ip to both my isp's ip and my VPN ip but niether work.

What am i missing?

Proper way to reset/clear/erase the R8000

I posted on another thread but this might be worthy of a seperate topic for people to reference.  I'm hoping that maybe KONG or others can point people like me in the right direction with how to properly clear things out on R8000.

Background, i have done a lot of reading across DD-WRT and this site as well as other Google hits and have found all kinds of information/detail and the key thing is that depending on hardware running a particular procedure may work, it may not work or you may take a device to a state that is very painful to reset.

I'm looking for detail on specificlaly the R8000 on how to do the following:

  1. I have DD-WRT KONG build on device and now i need to reset the configuration to base KONG build configuration? Is this as simple as "reset" in the web UI?
  2. I have DD-WRT KONG build on device and now I have upgraded KONG build, what should i do?  What is the proper procedure to follow between builds?
  3. I have DD-WRT KONG build on device and something goes terribly wrong after i upgrade to next KONG build, my device isn't functional, what do i do?  In the past 30-30-30 was the process but does this apply to ARM based devices like the R8000?
  4. I have DD-WRT KONG build and I want to rever back to Netgear stock firmware (for some odd reason), what do I do?  As simple as go into Web UI and upgrade fimrware with Netgear firmware?  If so, CHK or BIN file?
  5. When do i need to reset or clear NVRAM on the device and how do i do this?  Are there subtle differences in a reset vs clear of NVRAM?
  6. When i'm SoL and think i have bricked the device, what can I do?  Should i use a USB to TVL connector and PUTTY in and start clearing NVRAM?  What/how do i do this?

I will take the answers from KONG and others and keep track on this thread.  In the end I will summarize all the detail in to an FAQ.  I really need this and i'm thinking that others do as well.  There is a ton of knowledge but seems to be all over the place....

Thanks for everyones help!!

WiFi network design advice needed

$

I am in the planning stages of replacing a mish-mash of WiFi routers for a new client, and I've never had to design something this complicated.  I'm mostly a programmer, and definitely NOT a networking (much less WiFi) guru.

What they currently have is a set of low-end consumer routers - mostly Linksys (or worse) junk - spread out through 4 buildings on about a 4-acre campus.

Currently, all the routers are hardwired back to a server room, where there is a Peplink Balance210 router/firewall in between the LAN and WAN.  All the WiFi routers are in whatever version of access point mode they support - for most that's nothing more than turning off their DHCP servers.

I have two major problems to solve here.  First,, the client wants to have a internet-access-only guest network throughout the campus, while simultaneously giving privileged users access to the LAN.  Only a couple of the existing routers (Asus RT-AC68P) even have support for a guest network, but since they aren't directly tied into the WAN, the "guest" network still sees the local LAN.  And none of the other routers in the remaining buildings have ANY guest network support, or even any support for multilple SSIDs at all.

Second issue is that none of these routers support more than a couple dozen simultaneous WiFi clients.  The client is a medium-sized church (500+ seats in the sanctuary), and they want to be able to have 100+ WiFi connections going just in the sanctuary.

I need a solution that will solve both above issues, while:

1. Hopefully re-using at least the "good" Asus routers,

2. and remaining as inexpensive as possible.  I've got a budget of about $1,000 - much more than that and they'll just scrap the whole idea.

I've looked at the Open-Mesh product line, and I think they would do what I need, within or at least close to the budget,  but I'd rather use Netgear.  It's all I use personally and for more basic WiFi setups for clients.  However, when I looked at the "business-level" Netgear stuff, it seems definitely out of my budget.

Thanks for reading this far, and I'm open to all suggestions.

R8000 Use as a personal VPN Server

$

Hi, please help me out as a newbie on this forum and the R8000.

I would like to create a tunnel from my remote work site (in asia) to my home network in the (US). I am thinking to buy two R8000s, one to use at the remote work site and one as a VPN server at my home location. I would like restrict my remote traffic only to my home site and then access internet as if I am seen as in the US (due to censorships).

Is this possible with the R8000 as a VPN server at home ? Or is it better to just use the R8000 as the remote router and have a dedicated PC as the VPN server at home ?

Thank you for your inputs.

dd-wrt WAN DHCP and R8000 vs wndr4500

$

========Long post: Sorry but there is a lot of background. Below was posted in a DSLreports forum but the issue was originally posted here under the WNDR4500v1 forum when I was troubleshooting that device.========

I have had Charter cable since about 2008 and after a bad period between 2008-2009 is had been rock solid. Almost like a real utility, always on. Fast forward to 6 weeks ago and it has become nearly 100% unreliable. for the past 4-5 years I have been using a Motorola SB6120 modem and Netgear wnd4500v1 router running dd-wrt. This setup just worked, no issues at all. Out of no where started having problems. After extensive troubleshooting I began to notice consistent WAN DHCP issues. Where I used to get a dynamic IP assignment that would last for weeks I was now getting leases that were as short as 1 hour with nothing greater that 6 hours for weeks.

The problem initially started with incomplete DHCP where I would get WAN ip, subnet and gateway but no DNS. To counter I configured the router with a static openDNS DNS assignment. Eventually I stopped getting DHCP addresses at all from the modem almost as if the WAN port on the router had died. I found that if I cycled the WAN port from active to disabled back to active DHCP I would get a complete DHCP assignment but again with a short 1 hour lease. When the lease was up the connection would drop. No new lease. Sometimes the connection would be up for days without issue then bam, can't get an address.

Suspecting old gear was the problem I replaced the power brick on the router which tested good with no load. No impact on the problem. Checked the power brick on the modem and found it was providing 14.4vdc when it should have been 12vdc. Replaced. Charter tech stated signals from the Motorola modem improved with the new power brick but were still marginal. I suspected the 14.4vdc damaged the modem. Yesterday I replaced the Motorola modem AND the router. I had an old DOCSIS 3.0 Ubee modem from Charter that I never used since I had the Motorola. I also purchased and configured a new Netgear R8000 with the latest dd-wrt firmware.

This configuration it worse than the old setup. After a few hours the router just stops responding. At lest with the old wndr4500 the LAN side of the router would continue to work perfectly even when the WAN was down. I could dial into the 4500 to look at the WAN config and see it was not getting an assignment. With the R8000 LAN and WAN just stop responding. Charter support claims the modem looks good but can't explain the change in WAN DCHP assignments and why the modem will not acknowledge DHCP request. I have a serial connection configured on the wndr4500v1 and can watch the unanswered discovery request sent to the modem.

The only thing in common at this point is dd-wrt as the modems have been changed and routers swapped. I currently have the old 4500 router in place as it is more reliable than the new R8000 which freezes after a few hours. As a last test I will re-flash the old 4500 with the oldest dd-wrt I can find to see if something changed with the new builds but I can't do that with the R8000 as everything is new with that router. I still think Charter has changed something in their network config that is breaking dd-wrt routers. Connecting laptop directly to modem via a switch always works. I have not tried re-flashing the R8000 router back to Netgear firmware an may test that this weekend. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

ExpressVPN with R8000/DD-WRT (Kong's 10-26-15)

Hi.  I have tried to use ExpressVPN with the R8000, following ExpressVPN's setup instructions - but i loose WAN connectivity when I enable the OpenVPN client on the router.  I hope someone can help resolve.  Thanks in advance...

The details:

1) ExpressVPN provides detailed instructions for setting up on DD-WRT, and I've used it successfully on an different router, flashed with the DD-WRT BIG build.

2) on the R8000, the VPN screen is different than the VPN screen on the "BIG" build.  The differences I see on the screen are:

a) The ExpressVPN setup shows a box called "MSS-Fix/Fragment across the tunnel", with a value of "1450". That box does not appear on the DD-WRT screen.

b) DD-WRT now has a text box called "PKCS12 key". This box does not show in the ExpressVPN setup instruction.

c) DD-WRT now has a text box called "Static Key". This box does not show in the ExpressVPN setup instructions

d) DD-WRT now has radio button for "User Pass Authentication" - I have this disabled.

3) ExpressVPN's OPVN configuration file contains 3 keys:  TLS Auth, CA Cert and Public Client Cert.  I've pasted those keys into to the DD-WRT's corresponding boxes ("TLA Auth Key", "CA Cert" and "Public Client Cert".)

4) when I enable the OpenVPN client,  WAN connectivity is lost. Using Chrome, Web pages report "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT".

5) As a test, I left the OpenVPN client enabled, but removed the key from the "TLS Auth Key".  That maintained full connectivity, but without a VPN - it acted as if the VPN was disabled.

I would be greateful for any assistance.  I am only moderately technical, and VPN is outside my skill set, so apologies in advance if i need too much handholding.

Thanks,

Lorne

iptables-save on DD-WRT v3.0-r28514 std (12/28/15)

Regarding the lack of iptables-save on DD-WRT, where might I find the iptables-save .ipk to install on the R8000? If there is no .ipk for iptables-save, how might I go about compiling the source?

I have a 32,000+ iptables ruleset that I made a shell script from Peerblock bluetack/iblocklist lists that I want to restore on bootup. I can (and do) use Administration > Commands -> Firewall to save some rulesets, but the web-based interface can only handle a couple hundred entries before it siezes up.

Now I can just run my shell script to restore the rulesets on bootup, but it takes about 15-20 minutes which is unacceptable, compared to just iptables-restore -c < firewall.rules

I suppose I can make a copy of /etc/.ipt and manually edit and restore said file, but there should be an easier way to do this.

For iptables, i've read:

https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Iptables_command is of no help.

For installing packages, i've read:

R8000 utilizing both 5Ghz Radios

I have the latest firmware for the R8000 (late December 2015) but I cannot seem to do anything with the second 5GHZ radio.

I have tried every possible combination of enabling both radios and adjusting settings to take full advantage of each radio but they seem to interfeer with each other.

I ended up disabling one of the radios and the best I can get is 400mb from the 5ghz radio.

Any ideas here?

Bricked R8000

Hello,

I bricked my R8000 yesterday after configuring the latest Kong release. I did some changes to the wireless security and after the reboot it was no longer accessible.

I can ping the router for a short time and after that, it seems to reboot. The router returns ttl 100 while pinging, but it's impossible to tftp a new firmware.

I tried several clients, Linux and Windows without succes. I always get time outs.

Is there any hope for me R8000.

Thanks a lot!

Best wishes

Briding R8000 with AT&T Uverse Motorola Gateway

$

I recently bought a Nighthawk X6 R8000 with the intent of installing it behind my Uverse Gateway.  I want the Nighthawk to handle all the routing for my internal network and wireless.  The only thing I want the Uverse gateway to do is serve up Uverse T.V.

I plan on setting up VPN on the Nighthawk as well so that all traffic (wired and wireless) goes through the VPN.  I also plan on hooking up a USB drive for network storage as well.

What I am running into is it appears the Uverse gateway is in no way friendly to bridging and most information I have found pertains to older 2Wire gateways and not the Motorola gateways.  I thought that in order to make things easy I would put the Nighthawk on a 10.0.0.1 network.  When I first got the Nighthawk and hooked it up, I connected it to one of my switches and it immediately detected it was behind a router and set it to the 10.0.0.1 network which was awesome, and it updated the firmware.

However, when I installed the DD-WRT firmware, that was all wiped out.

So all of that to ask does anyone have some good instructions on how to configure the Uverse gateway and how to set up the Nighthawk?  I turned the wireless off on the Uverse Gateway.  I think I have to set the DHCP to just serve out one IP address then somehow configure a passthrough?  I want the Nighthawk to handle all of the Firewall work as well so I suppose I have to turn all of that off on the Uverse gateway as well?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
