R8000 on Tomato by Shibby 138 AIO

Have always been using Tomato Shibby without too much on detail setting for previous ASUS routers.

First time changing to Netgear and some findings below would like to seek advice.

Some setup reference:

  • 5G both same SSID
  • wireless network mode: auto
  • channel width: 80 MHz
  • sideband: upper

questions:

  1. seems cannot choose network mode as ac only for both 5G?
  2. there's no difference in changing antenna transmit power? signal strength seems the same when change from default 40 to 70.
  3. need some advice on cifs mounting, upon setup only showing "mounting...", checked log always show error code -127. trying to save log into NAS.

R8000 - DDNS - Firewall Blocking Traffic

Hi,

Upgraded my R8000 from stock firmware to DD-WRT "Kong Mod" for NETGEAR R8000 2016-11-10 and found that everythig is great  except for DDNS.

I am and have previously used No-IP.com with no issues.   I can see from the status window that the alias has been updated successfully and verified this within No_IP.com site.

The issue that I am experiencing is that I can remotely connect to and administer the router when the Firewall is turned off.  When the firewall is on the incomming connection attempt is dropped.   I can see this from the logs.

I have everthing unchecked on the firewall page except for Block Anonymous WAN Requests (ping).

I would really appreciate some assistance to get this working when the firewall is active.

Regards

John.

I'm unable to turn off the router lead lights once flashed the router with DD-WRT "Kong Mod".  Is there a way to have this feature back?  These lead lights generated extra heat/electric that I'm trying to avoid

Hello,

I setup port 5003 (Filemaker Server) to forward and for some reason this port doesn't work. Everyother port works.

I have tried port forwarding range, I have tried standard port forwarding nothing worked, I have rebooted the router, I have turned out the services and turned back on with no solution.

I hope someone provide me a solution.

Try to install Private Internet Access VPN from Netgear R8000 Router.

I managed succesfully flash my router(using DD-WRT "Kong Mod" for NETGEAR R8000 2016-11-10)

I select TigerVpn, because there is ready startUp script for DD-wrt, https://help.tigervpn.com/support/solutions/articles/1000203620-dd-wrt-

Breaf moment after script setup, everything works fine. But then vpn just disapear and even router boot wount restart vpn. Only working method is reset factory defaults and  re setup startup script?

Any suggestion what I should try?

Hello everyone,

I want to know which fw shoudl I flash if I want repeater mode to work well on the R8000.  Which one runs better/more stable for a wireless repeater mode?  I saw another member who used the nov fw from Kong for the repeater function and it bricked his router.  This is my first time using a non official fw so I would like to get something that works good enough w/out worries of getting bricked and can be return to official fw if possible.

Block Sites and Time Schedule

I am new to this forum. I have a Nighthawk r8000 router. I am trying out the Nighthawk router and I am comparing its features to Linksys and Asus routers. The router has the latest stock firmware. So, my issues with the Nighthawk router is time scheduling and blocking sites PER hour PER device. I am not a big fan of OpenDNS, I do understand that it might be helpful to some people but I prefer to apply restrictions on the router itself. I would prefer NOT to use OpenDNS for filtering or setting parental controls.

I understand you can set a time schedule to turn off the wireless radios in turn it affects all devices. I prefer to leave the wireless radios on and restrict the time to a single device. This should be a basic feature that comes with most routers. I am not sure why Netgear has excluded this feature from the Nighthawk R8000.  Next, I tried to block sites by keyword. I did try to block Facebook by adding Facebook as a keyword but I was, still, able to access it on my iPod (url and app) and laptop after I hit apply. I am not sure if it takes a few minutes for the restriction to get applied but it didn't seem to work.  Again, basic features should be included with the Nighthawk router.

My two goals:

1) I need to be able to set filters to block social media (FB, Twitter, KIK, etc..), movie streaming (Netflix, Youtube) and games (Movie Star Planet) PER device on an HOURLY basis. If I don't want my daughter to access Netflix for two hours in the afternoon, I should be able to make that quick block and it takes immediate affect on ALL of her devices. After two hours pass, I can grant her Netflix access.

2) I need to be able to set a time schedule PER device on an HOURLY basis. I need the ability to set a time schedule to block internet access after 9pm on certain devices.  During the day, if I don't want my 2nd daughter to have internet access on ALL devices, again, I should be able to make the quick restriction to block time on all of the devices. After an hour or two has passed, I can grant her access on her devices.

I was thinking of trying the DDWRT firmware. I don't know anything about DDWRT firmware. Let me as a few questions regarding DDWRT.

1.What is the best method to install DDWRT firmware without having any issues?

2. If I install DDWRT firmware, does this firmware provide better parental controls such as blocking sites and setting a time schedule?

3. After I install DDWRT firmware, if I don't like it or I start to experience some unknown issues, can I revert back to the stock firmware?

I like the Nighthawk router and it is a fast router. However, I need to work through some of these issues such as time scheduling and being able to block sites to individual devices. I like the Linksys 1900ac and Asus 68u, these routers were very easy to set parental controls and set a time schedule. I can do all of this on the router itself. I would like to get away from using OpenDNS.

R8000 - DDWRT Setting Time Limits

$

How would I be able to set up access time limits on a dvice?  For example, in my case, I'd like to limit my son's Xbox use to any two hours a day, Sunday through Thursday.

I don't see a way to do this directly within DDWRT, so I'm guessing some scripting might be required.  Would anyone know how to do this or direct me to some resources I can use?

Thanks much and Happy New Year!

Netgear R8000 Tomato install problem

Hi all

I reset my NEtgear R8000 to factory settings and then did the firmware upgrade using the initial Tomato firmware titled tomato-R8000-1.28ARM--134-initial-64K.chk and it seemed to install fine. However, I have encountered a problem. The router powers on, but I cannot access it from my wired computer. I have powered it on and off a few times. I have also reset it by pressin the reset button onthe back. I have tried what I thought was the IP address which is 10.0.0.1 and have tried 192.168.1.1   No luck. On my wired desktop I can see the ethernet connection icon on the status panel by the clock, but it has the yellow warning triangle saying no Internet Connection. Conincidentally, the Internet led light on the router is not on either.

Am I missing someting?  CAn anyone provide some suggestions?

(PLEX)Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r31085M kongac (01/04/17)

I am trying to figure out the change on

Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r31085M kongac (01/04/17)

I have a huge plex server that people connect to on a daily basis to stream.  I have updated the router software to the above.  Everything is NAT correctly.  I have been doing this for years.  I even QOS 32400 for plex Maximum.  I am getting complaints from clients constantly today saying that they are having issues.

My computer does a lot of transcoding for these movies/tv shows.   If they can direct play it does that also.  I have had up to 5-6 people at a time watching 1080 videos without a complaint or problem with my Plex server.  It is not the server as I monitor it most of the day.

Please help.   I am going to go back to stock netgear firmware and just normal NAT it back to when I first got this router so long ago.

I can write down specs on what runs on what in my network and I can even draw you a diagram if someone needs it.  I have a good setup and never had the problem until this update.

Changelog - Update Info on Firmware

Hi, I don't want to state a crazy question, however, I have had a hard time between these forums and the dd-wrt forums trying to search for information or files that contain changelogs and/or update information on these roms when they are updated..

I am currently running the King Mod dd-wrt.K3_R8000_4 and it appears that they have an updated dd-wrt.K3_R8000_5 version..  I would like to know what was updated on this firmware?

Thanks for any info on this question.

Stuck on Shibby Tomato - - Looking for Options

$

Greetings, we recently upgraded our connection to FIOS 750 and our R8000 that was built DD-WRT was seriously throttling our bandwidth.  So we switched over the shibby's Tomato build as it supports CTF but we then learned that with CTF enabled port forwarding does not work.  At this point it seems that the best thing to do is to go back to the Netgear OEM firmware but I am not sure how to get the needed TRX file as seem to be stuck in Tomato.  I would love for some input on how to get out of this bind as well as what other with a 700+Mbs connection are using.
